This plant is distantly related to our well-known celery plant.
Since primeval times the wild plateaus of the Andes, a hostile and steep region with extreme climatic conditions are the homeland of Maca. Up to now Maca is one the most profitable sources of income and also an essential food of this very pour mountainous region.
In the 16th century already the Spanish conquerors have brought the Maca root to Europe. For those colonialists Maca was of such an enormous value that they even accepted it as a legal means of payment.

The special preference of Maca plant is its ability to preserve its vital substances almost completely even after a long years storage.

The Peruvian Institute "Universidad National Agraria La Molina" confirms by an official letter that Maca is an essential food for Peru since it contains up to 12% protein and high percentages of calcium, zinc and phosphorous. Further they say, that Maca can be consumed without any restrictions and quality limitations.
