Acerola - the natural vitamin C

The acerola cherry, lat. malpighia glabra, also known as the "cherry of the Antilles", originates from Central America and is now mainly cultivated in Brazil. The 2 to 3 meter high shrub, which requires an average annual temperature of at least 26 °C to thrive, can produce up to 30 kg of fruit per year. The taste of the orange-yellow to dark red cherry-sized fruit is slightly tart and reminiscent of lemon.

Our organic acerola products contain only natural acerola vitamin C, without added synthetic vitamin C.

Find out more about our acerola product variants:

  • Conventional acerola powder in 2 variants, bulk or pre-packed
  • Organic acerola powder spray-dried in 2 variants, in bulk or pre-packed
  • Organic freeze-dried acerola powder in 2 variants, bulk or pre-packed

Conventional acerola powder

Variant 1
with 17% natural vitamin C

Variant 2
with 17% natural + synthetic vitamin C

Properties

  • Our conventional (not organic) acerola cherries come from "integrated and sustainable cultivation", i.e. the acerola bushes are planted in the middle of the wild and untouched nature of the Amazon region.
  • The powder is made from a mix of ripe and unripe fruit, as each degree of ripeness has its own specific properties: the unripe fruit has a higher vitamin content, while the ripe fruit contains more plant substances.
  • The carrier, a high-quality maltodextrin, is obtained from GMO-free maize.

Organic acerola powder spray-dried

with 17% natural vitamin C

Variant 1

with corn maltodextrin (GMO-free)

Variant 2

with cassava maltodextrin

Properties

  • The powder is made from unripe fruit with a small proportion of ripe fruit. The color of the powder is therefore rather beige/yellowish.
  • It comes from controlled organic cultivation and is subject to strict organic regulations.

Organic freeze-dried acerola powder

Variant 1
Organic acerola fruit powder with approx. 17 % natural vitamin C

Variant 2
Organic acerola fruit powder with approx. 30 % natural vitamin C (with a high proportion of green acerola cherries)

Properties

  • In contrast to spray drying, freeze-drying, the gentlest method for producing fruit powders, does not require a carrier such as maltodextrin. The powder is 100 % pure.
  • Freeze-drying takes place at low temperatures of -12°C to a maximum of -25°C until the moisture content is < 5%. No heat is used, as is the case with spray drying. As a result, the acerola powder retains a more natural color and a more fruity taste.

Benefits of the acerola berry and potential effects

Benefits of the acerola berry

Valuable ingredientsAcerola cherries contain a range of valuable ingredients that have many positive effects on health: vitamins - especially vitamin C, minerals, trace elements, secondary plant substances phenolic acids, carotenoids, flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin and anthocyanins.
Natural vitamin C - the highly effective all-rounder

Acerola is one of the fruits with the highest vitamin C content in the world (1500-4500 mg/100 g, which is around 50-100 times higher than that of oranges or lemons).
The effects of vitamin C, which have been tested and scientifically proven by the EFSA, include the following:

- contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal psychological function, to normal energy metabolism, to normal function of the immune system (physical defense), to normal function of the nervous system,

- contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress,

- contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, teeth, gums and skin,

- increases the absorption of iron.

Acerola production –
sustainable and fair

We buy our raw materials directly from the producers,
pay fair prices and support the farmers and producers.

The acerola berry can be harvested several times a year, as it has several flowering and fruiting cycles in tropical climates. It takes around 3-4 weeks from flowering to the first fruits. However, the main harvest periods for our suppliers are November to April. Additional harvests can take place between May and August, depending on regional weather conditions and cultivation methods. Both red and green berries are harvested. The main difference between green and red acerola berries lies in their ripeness, nutrient content and flavor.

After harvesting, the acerola cherries are immediately transported to the production facilities.

The acerola berries delivered are washed in large containers with cold water. They are then placed in quarantine, where they are only allowed to leave after a successful laboratory check.

During spray drying, the selected fruits are processed into a viscous mass in a special basin. Using the carrier maltodextrin, the powder extract is produced in state-of-the-art dry spraying systems. The end product trickles directly from the spray towers into bags.

After harvesting, the acerola fruits are immediately processed into puree, pasteurized and frozen at temperatures of -25°C to -35°C. At these low temperatures, the puree freezes quickly, avoiding the formation of large ice crystals. The fruit is defrosted in special drying chambers in which the water changes directly from a solid to a gaseous state under vacuum. This freeze-drying process is called sublimation and takes place at low temperatures of -12°C to a maximum of -25°C until the moisture content is less than 5%.

On average, the ratio between acerola raw material and powder is 17:1, i.e. 1 kg of powder is produced from 17 kg of raw material.

To produce the freeze-dried powder with 30% vitamin C content, mainly green berries are used, as these contain more vitamin C than red berries.

Finally, the end product is tested in the laboratory and a reference sample is stored. After approval, the acerola powder is ready for dispatch.

Frequently asked questions about acerola

Yes. Whether you call it acerola berry or acerola cherry – it is always the same fruit, known for its exceptionally high natural vitamin C content. The name “acerola cherry” came about because the small red fruit resembles cherries in appearance – although botanically it does not belong to the cherry family, but to the Malpighiaceae family.

We source our acerola directly from Brazil, specifically from the Amazon region, through long-standing partners who adhere to the highest quality and environmental standards.

Natural vitamin C from acerola occurs in a natural complex of phytonutrients – including bioflavonoids, anthocyanins, and other antioxidants. These accompanying compounds support the absorption and utilization of vitamin C in the body and can enhance its overall effectiveness. In contrast, synthetic vitamin C (ascorbic acid) contains only the isolated active ingredient, without the beneficial natural cofactors. Moreover, acerola-derived vitamin C comes from a sustainable, plant-based source and aligns more closely with a holistic, natural lifestyle.

Vitamin C is the umbrella term, while ascorbic acid is the main chemical form of it. Natural sources often provide additional nutrients that can improve absorption, while synthetic ascorbic acid is a convenient supplement form.

The name ascorbic acid was derived from the term "anti-scorbutic acid". The well-known seafaring disease "scurvy" occurred in seafarers when they did not consume vitamin C for a long period of time, i.e. suffered from a vitamin C deficiency. The term "ascorbic" means "without scurvy".

Acerola is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C – an essential antioxidant that supports the normal function of the immune system. It helps strengthen the body’s defenses, especially during times of increased stress, such as colds, mental strain, or physical exertion. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals and protects cells from oxidative stress. This protection is vital for healthy skin, blood vessels, eyes, and the overall cellular environment. Vitamin C also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and supports normal energy metabolism. Many people report feeling more energetic and resilient with regular intake.

Yes, natural vitamin C improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods – this is especially relevant for people with low iron intake or vegetarians.

The recommended daily intake is ½ teaspoon of acerola powder (about 1 g). Depending on the product, this amount provides approximately 170–300 mg of natural vitamin C.
For optimal absorption, we recommend stirring the powder into juice or a smoothie, or sprinkling it over muesli, yogurt, or other cold dishes.
Please do not heat it, as vitamin C is sensitive to heat and can lose its effectiveness at high temperatures.
In case of increased need (e.g., during periods of particular stress), the amount can be increased up to 2 g per day. It is best to consult your doctor or a nutrition specialist about this.

The term "vitamin" is derived from the Latin word "vita" and means "life".

A distinction is made between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, must be taken regularly - ideally daily - as they cannot be stored by the body in the long term.

According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the daily requirement for vitamin C is between 90 and 110 mg for adolescents aged 15 and over and adults. Even with an increased vitamin C requirement, such as in stressful situations, heavy physical work, for smokers (they need approx. 40 % more vitamin C), there are no negative long-term consequences or side effects. People with kidney dysfunction or a higher risk of urinary stones should not exceed the recommended daily amount.

Acerola lozenges or acerola fruit powder provide your body with natural vitamin C and make an important contribution to your health.

A small addition of acerola powder with 17 % natural vitamin C accelerates the maturing process and improves the shelf life of the flour.
Just 0.1 % acerola powder in relation to the amount of flour is sufficient.

The powder also has a positive effect on kneading and the stability of the dough, which becomes more elastic and easier to shape. During the final "rising" process, the dough can better trap the carbon dioxide produced during yeast fermentation, which makes the end product more airy and shapely.

It is remarkable that even such a small amount of acerola fruit powder has a noticeably positive effect on the dough - and also offers added health benefits thanks to the vitamin C it contains. Although vitamin C is broken down by heating, a small amount is still retained in the baked end product.

A "normal" acerola powder contains 17% vitamin C. If the cherries are processed into a fruit powder with 30% natural vitamin C using a highly complex production method known as "freeze-drying", this powder deserves to be called "high-dose". Just 1 g of acerola powder contains 300 mg of pure vitamin C, compared to 170 mg of vitamin C in spray-dried acerola powder.

Acerola has a slightly tart to fruity-fresh taste. The powder can be easily added to smoothies, water, yogurt, or dietary supplements.

Acerola powder is ideal for natural vitamin C supply—especially during the cold season, times of stress, physical exertion, or a limited diet. It can be used in drinks, meals, or dietary supplements.

Yes, in an adjusted dosage, acerola is also suitable for children. The natural form of vitamin C is well tolerated. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult a doctor or healthcare practitioner.

Acerola is generally very well tolerated. At very high doses, however, it can cause gastrointestinal reactions—similar to any vitamin C. In such cases, we recommend taking smaller amounts or consulting a doctor.

When stored in a dry, light-protected place, the powder is shelf-stable for at least 24 months—the exact expiration date is indicated on the label. It is important not to use damp spoons to scoop the powder from the container and to keep the container tightly closed at all times, otherwise the powder may clump.

No — when used purposefully, with high quality, and responsibly.

When dietary supplements make sense:

  • In cases of increased need due to stress, sports, illness, or medication use
  • During specific life stages such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or old age
  • With a limited or special diet (e.g., vegan)
  • When natural sources are seasonally or qualitatively limited
  • For targeted supply of micronutrients, e.g., vitamin C from organic acerola

When they can be problematic:

  • If taken in excessive doses or combined without coordination
  • With poor product quality, such as many additives or contaminants
  • When taken with certain medications without medical advice
  • If misunderstood as a substitute for a healthy diet
