Thanks to our 30 years of experience, passion and motivation, we have become a leading expert in natural food supplements.
Black cumin, lat. nigella sativa, is a spice plant from the buttercup family that is not related to caraway or cumin. After flowering, this cultivated plant forms poppy-like capsules which contain the seeds. Black cumin is mainly cultivated in Asia and the Middle East, where it has enough sun to thrive.
In many places, black cumin is considered to be the most successful natural remedy of recent decades. In the Orient, the oil has been highly valued as spice and remedy for more than 3000 years. Even the Islamic prophet Mohammed wrote the symbolic sentence in his book "Hadith": "Black cumin cures every disease except death".
Black cumin seed oil and black cumin seeds are ideal as an ingredient for
Black cumin seed oil and black cumin seed oil capsules are also ideal for direct consumption.
Valuable ingredients | Black cumin oil seeds contain up to 2.5% essential oil, including thymoquinone. The seeds also contain carotenes, monounsaturated and especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, phenols, sterols, alkaloids and saponins. Black cumin contains the trace elements zinc, chromium, vanadium, manganese and selenium, the elements magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium and barium, vitamin B1 (thiamine), niacin, vitamin B6 and folic acid (Prof. Dr. Sigrun Chrubasik-Hausmann, black cumin). |
Skin and hair | Applied externally, black cumin oil is a natural care and strengthening agent for skin and hair. |
Tick defense | Black cumin oil is used to repel ticks for dogs. The scent and the chemical components of the oil have a repellent effect on ticks and other insects. |

We source our raw materials directly from the producers.
Our black cumin seeds come from suppliers in the largest oasis in Egypt - "El Fayoum", which means "vegetable garden of Cairo". This area west of the Nile used to be a marshland. Today, it is considered an ideal growing area where particularly high-quality plants thrive, including our black cumin.
Fair prices are the basis for a trusting partnership. We have been receiving consistently high quality from our supplier for over 30 years.
The black cumin plants intended for oil extraction are sown by our producer in September.
After flowering, the plant forms fruit capsules and gradually dies from below. Harvesting begins as soon as the capsules turn brown. The ripe black cumin seeds have a matt black sheen and give off a pleasant aroma reminiscent of aniseed. To protect the seed capsules from moisture, they are cut off before sunrise, before morning dew or fog settles on the plants. The cut plants are then laid out in large bundles on clean cloths to dry out, then threshed and filled into sacks.
The seeds are first cleaned in the oil mill. The subsequent gentle stamp pressing (cold pressing), a purely mechanical process, is carried out without any solvents.
The oil is then filtered to remove any remaining impurities.
Finally, the end product is subjected to a final laboratory test to ensure that it meets the legal requirements.
The use of black cumin as a medicinal plant goes way back into the history of the Orient. The healing power of the small black seeds was already known 3500 years ago. Small jars of black cumin oil have been found in graves. The applications seem endless. The Prophet Mohammed is said to have coined the saying "Black cumin cures every disease except death".
Only black cumin "Nigella Sativa" is referred to as the "real" original black cumin. The name "Roman coriander" or "St. Catherine's flower" is also interesting because the flower is reminiscent of St. Catherine's wheel.
Botanically, true black cumin belongs to the buttercup family. Caraway and cumin, on the other hand, belong to the umbellifer family and therefore have nothing in common with black cumin, apart from the similarity of the seeds.
Black sesame has similar seeds, but these have a rather flat teardrop shape. Black cumin seeds are wrinkled and have three edges. Botanically, black sesame is not related to black cumin.
The taste of black cumin oil is described as "characteristic", "spicy-hot", "more bitter than pepper", and also "mild" depending on the degree of ripeness. This makes it an ideal accompaniment to oriental cuisine.
Unfiltered black cumin seed oil is the oil as it comes out of the oil press. It contains cloudy substances and solid components of the seed. The suspended and cloudy matter also makes the oil significantly sharper in taste.
Filtered black cumin seed oil is produced by removing the suspended and turbid matter from the crude oil by filtering. This makes the oil clear and milder in taste. Our AMAZONAS black cumin oil is gently cold-pressed and filtered in an oil mill.
Our recommendation:
AMAZONAS organic black cumin oil: Enjoy 6 ml (approx. 2 teaspoons) daily on its own or mix it into any drink, salad or starter.
Black cumin oil for the hair: Biotin, also known as vitamin H, helps against split ends and activates the formation of keratin, the body's own horny substance. Black cumin oil nourishes, softens and tones the scalp and hair. It brings shine and softness to dull, dry and tired hair.
Black cumin oil for the skin: It is said that Cleopatra used black cumin oil for beauty care - and her beauty was legendary.
One tiny black cumin seed contains over 100 active ingredients, such as beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, which protects our skin tissue. Another powerful trio consists of the omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids, rich in skin-friendly linoleic acid.
This is why black cumin oil is so effective for treating and alleviating skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. The clarifying, antioxidant effect of black seed oil helps to slow down skin ageing. It also has a natural antibiotic, antiseptic and antifungal effect. Its active ingredients soothe burns, care for cracked skin and relieve sunburn.
If the oil is stored in the original container in a dark and dry place, it can be kept for up to 2 years. Once opened, it can be kept in the refrigerator for 6 months. Black cumin oil should not be frozen. This can have a negative effect on the taste and quality.
Black cumin oil keeps ticks away. Of course, it will never be possible to completely prevent tick infestations, but the use of black seed oil will repel ticks. Experience reports say that fleas also stay away from the dog.
Cats lack important enzymes to sufficiently break down the substances contained in the oil (including terpenes). The degradation process is very slow. This means that even small amounts of the oil administered over a sufficiently long period of time can lead to symptoms of poisoning. Similar to other essential oils, liver damage can occur.
The toxic effect has not yet been explicitly proven in studies. However, until safety studies are available, black cumin oil should not be administered to cats under any circumstances. In pregnant animals, black cumin oil can even trigger an abortion (regardless of whether it is administered to dogs or cats). An overdose (even 1 drop!) can lead to symptoms of poisoning and even death.
Black cumin oil is generally well tolerated and side effects are rare. Possible undesirable effects of black cumin oil include nausea and itching, according to the Freiburg University Medical Center. Allergic reactions are also possible. During pregnancy, the women should generally refrain from taking essential oils, as they can have a labor-inducing effect.
The thymoquinone content in our black cumin seed oil is approx. 0.07-0.2%.
